The community is recovering thanks to help from World Vision and other NGOs. Surfing champion Bethany Hamilton visited the community in August, 2005, to encourage the children. In 2003 Bethany lost her left arm and nearly her life in a shark attack off the north coast of Kauai, Hawaii. But working courageously to adapt to her new physical reality, she returned to surfing competitively and now enjoys her role of public speaking and writing about faith, family and determination.
